Whether it's a small personal gathering or an event of the year, celebrating your child greatly impacts them socially, cognitively, and constructively.
1. Socially
When your child becomes the center of attention, it teaches them how to react socially. This gives their little peers an opportunity to see your child outside of their school setting.
Socializing in groups can also be intimidating, so hosting a safe group party in a place they feel comfortable, may give your child the confidence they need to be themselves socially.
Not only does celebrating their big day teaches them to interact socially, but also strengthens relationships and trust. They will remember who celebrated them and how those people made them FEEL. It will give them a sense of belonging and worth.
Their identity and who they think of themselves will be affirmed, as well as, their likes and interests that will be shared through a theme or a flavor of cake or the games played!
The amount of positivity and joy of celebrating who they are will last forever in their feelings and thoughts.
2. Cognitively
This is one of the most simple ways you can show and teach them how to honor themselves and others. Celebrating them for who they ARE rather than an achievement or accomplishment.
Celebrating your child will leave a lasting POSITIVE memory for them to look back on. As we get older, the more we understand time and how quickly it passes. These are the moments as parents that we can selfishly cherish and celebrate with them.
Birthdays also give them something exciting to look forward to.
3. Constructively
"Show me and I'll forget. Tell me and I may remember. Involve me and I'll Understand."
We can tell our children how to celebrate and honor someone, however, by involving our children in the WHY may give them a perspective one can only achieve through experience.
Learning is more often than not a social process. Through these social experiences we obtain knowledge from others and even from challenges. This helps them become more self aware, problem solve, and how to work together.
Celebrating their birthday will also teach them the value and understanding of time. Unfortunately, time is taught and experienced. With every passing year, there is another candle to mark their time and that can give them the opportunity to learn about seasons, months, dates, and years.
As we get older, there is a sense of responsibility and reward. The older one becomes, the more one can do, have, or achieve.
So what is the importance of celebrating birthdays?
At the end of the day, celebrating your child will simply make them happy. As parents, isn't that all we want for our child, for us, and even for others? Birthdays are more than just cakes and desserts... Its a their day, their BIG day... Their day to BE.
